Halloween by the Beach

It’s one of the most awaited holidays of the year, and most of us really prepare for the costumes and activities that we’ll be doing during this event. Since time immemorial, we’ve always been super excited to celebrate Halloween in our unique ways. But what is really the essence of this holiday and since when did the festivities begin?

“Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31, and Halloween 2020 will occur on Saturday, October 31. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.”

Dating back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, the Celts who lived over 2,000 years agao in the area that is now Ireland, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of harvest and the beginning of dark, cold winter. Winter is often associated to human death, and Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. That’s why the celebrated the Samhain on the night of October 31, when ghosts were believed to return to the earth. Although this holiday has a strong western origin, we Filipinos have come to adapt to this festivity due to the western influences that we got from the colonization periods of Spain and USA. Over the years, we’ve developed the tradition of doing trick or treats and other scare fairs as well to observe this thrilling night.

And although our celebrations this year might be quite different from before, there are still certain places where Davaoenos chose to observe this special day. One halloween event in Davao Oriental was hosted by Governor Generoso’s newest beach resort called Camp Bernardino de Lavigan. Their promo, Camp and Cauldrons, which included low buffet price rates and 3+1 for beer, was actually a success. If you missed this promo, no worries because this Davao Oriental Beach only has it starting. Check them out at campbernardino.com for more promos and updates!

How to Find the Right Diving Center

Going to strange places and far off lands makes us experience some things that we don’t normally do in our mundane lives. When we travel, it usually sparks a dormant love for nature - be it the mountains, the sea, or the woods. For people who have an inherent connection with the sea, you must have gone to the afar ends of the earth just to witness the greatest spots for swimming, diving and underwater exploration. The beaches here in the Philippines are most especially thriving with dive spots that offer some of the most memorable dive trips and courses. The only thing that is in question now, is how do you choose the best diving center that will cater to all your needs and preferences. Today, we’re sharing some of the most worthwhile tips.

Price is no reflection of quality - just because a shop or store offers great deals doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best. Remember, diving centers make they're living off of tourists. Never forget to put your safety on the top of your priorities, even before you consider practical factors. You need to know what you are looking for when choosing a dive center. There are reasons why some are cheaper than the others, so weigh your options and really take into consideration the other factors.

Don’t be afraid to ask - once you found the perfect store, be as inquisitive as you can. Ask the staff and the instructors questions that matter. They are there to assist you and help you make the right choices especially if you’re not familiar with the diving environments of the place. If you come across an unwilling staff, then choose another store.

Make an informed choice - asking questions will definitely lead you to this. Once you’ve eliminated all of the stores that made you uncomfortable or unsure, you’ll be left with one that’s probably the most fitting for you. Listen to personal recommendations of other divers who’ve tried the store, and if you can, try researching more about the store’s credibility from online reviews. Make an informed choice for your safety’s sake!

If you’re looking for the best place to dive in Davao, there is a new diving resort in Davao oriental that you can try out. It’s called Camp Bernardino de Lavigan. Water activities include diving, snorkeling, and some water sports. The good thing about this resort is they have a team of resident PADI certified divers, so you’re in good hands. Why Diving is More Fun in the Philippines

With 7,641 islands scattered across 300,000 sq km of ocean, the Philippines boasts some of the best diving spots on the planet. It is home to nearly 9% of the world’s coral reefs and is considered the epicenter of global marine biodiversity. “From historic wrecks to stunning roller-coaster drift dives; from migrating giant whales sharks to record numbers of nudibranch species - the Philippines has a mind-boggling array of wonderful diving.” Here are our top 5 picks for the country’s best diving sites:

Puerto Galera - no questions asked. When you think of diving, you immediately picture in your mind the archipelago’s dive central - bustling, fun, and great value. Its crystal clear waters allow for great visibility. It has abundant marine life, being home to more than 800 species of nudibranch alone and a huge variety of diving environments. One of the most exciting would be the renowned Canyons.

Malapascua island - a quaint picture-perfect spot in Visayas, this is one of the few places in the world where there are regular sightings of thresher sharks. The Monad Shoal which is a flat-topped, submerged seamount about 8km from the island, is used by the sharks as a cleaning station. These creatures get there early so be sure to be on the reef by dawn.

Anilao - located on the northern shore of the Verde Island Passage is Anilao. It has dozens of operators and resorts to choose from. The dive sites in this area range from seamounts and pinnacles to current-washed coral reefs.  You can even explore some shipwrecks, coral gardens and soft-sediment seagrasses and sponge.

Coron Bay - “On 24 September 1944, a squadron of 24 US bombers burst out of the sky above Coron Bay on the northern tip of the island of Palawan, the most westerly of the Philippine islands, located the Japanese supply fleet hiding among the islands below, and proceeded to blow it apart. Today Coron Bay has the best wreck diving in Southeast Asia, all packed into one relatively small area. “

Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental - if you’re looking for a diving resort in Davao, you’d probably come to think of those located in Talicud Island of Camiguin. But think again, because one of the newest beach resorts in Davao with diving activity as part of its itineraries is Camp Bernardino de Lavigan. It’s in the far ends of Davao Oriental, which is conveniently adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. The open waters make it a great spot for deep dives where you can see some of the rarest species of marine life. It’s now known to be a new favorite spot for macro photography underwater. You can check out more about this fresh spot at campbernardino.com and just type “what to do in Camp Bernardino de Lavigan” for more ideas.

Fun Water Games for Kids and Adults

It doesn’t matter whether you’re kids or adults, this list that we have today will be something that you can use as a guide for some water games that all ages will enjoy on your next beach getaway. So without further ado, here are the water games that you can try!

1. Cup To Cup

Supplies: Two buckets and plastic cups

Prep:

  • Put one full bucket of water in the grass and have one player sit right behind the bucket.
  • Have the rest of the team sit in a straight line right behind the first player.
  • Have the last person in the line turn and face the other way so the last two players are back to back instead of one after another.
  • Put another either smaller bucket or a bucket with a marked halfway line in front of the last player.

Play:

  • Give the first player an empty cup. They must dip the cup in the full bucket of water and pass it backwards over their head to the next kid.
  • The second kid must then pass it over to the third and so on until the final kid on the team dumps the water in the cup into the empty bucket.
  • Then pass the empty cup of water back up to the front.
  • Win:  The first team to fill their bucket wins.
  • Adult Version: Blindfold everyone in the line.

2. Sponge Toss

Supplies: Two plastic buckets, large sponges

Prep:

  • Place a bucket full of water on one side of the yard and place an empty bucket on the other.
  • Have teams line up their players anywhere between the two buckets but once they’re lined up – they are frozen in place and cannot change their placement.
  • One player on each team should be next to the full bucket and one next to the empty bucket.

Play:

  • The first player must dunk the sponge in the full bucket of water trying to soak up as much water as possible.
  • The player must toss the sponge to their next teammate who tosses it to the next and so on until it reaches the final player by the empty bucket.
  • That player wrings out the sponge and passes the empty sponge back down the line.

Win: First team to fill up their bucket to the marked line wins.

Adult Version: Place the buckets much further apart so the sponge has to be tossed harder and longer to get to the next teammate

For the safest waters where you can enjoy these easy games, just type “where to go in Davao Oriental” or “davao oriental beach resort’ and you will be redirected to campbernardino.com. Water activities in camp Bernardino are better enjoyed with games like these for the entire family.

Introducing Kids to Scuba Diving

Perhaps the best thing about being a parent is having your kids with whom you can share your passion with. You can pass it on to them and let them understand the things that you’ve dedicated most of your life to. If one of these things happens to be diving, then you’ve already most likely thought about introducing your children to the sport as early as possible. Yes, it can be done! There are a lot of scuba diving programs and courses designed specifically for kids. Diving can be a fulfilling experience for young people as it teaches them how to work under pressure, trust their instincts, listen to classes, and develop focus and mental concentration under stressful conditions. Moreover, it increases their sense of responsibility and confidence while enhancing their skills in certain classroom concepts such as physics and maths. Today we’re going to take a look at how to introduce kids to scuba diving in the most fun way.

Scuba Diving Courses

“PADI offers a choice of youth programs for kids aged eight and older. The most basic of these is the PADI Bubblemaker program, which allows children to experience the thrill of breathing underwater in a confined environment no deeper than 2 meters/ 6 feet. The PADI Seal Team program is more comprehensive.” For children to become fully certified, the minimum age requirement is 10 years old to be able to enroll in the PADI Junior Open water diver course. There are of course restrictions and limitations that follow upon enrolling, including the maximum depth to be dived in, and the age limit of who they should be diving with.

Diving Destination

If you sign up your kids for a scuba course while on a family trip, it’s always helpful to choose the right destination. You need to be realistic in choosing the spot that has the best conditions for novice and young divers. We all know how frightening bad visibility or strong current can be during your first time - and if your kids get scared, the chances are they won’t want to continue with their course. Choose somewhere with calm and clear seas that have an abundance of marine life and sandy dive sites. Locally, there are a lot of best places to scuba dive in Davao, like this new resort in Davao Oriental called Camp Bernardino.

Camp Bernardino de Lavigan’s activities
include free diving, scuba diving, snorkeling, and snorkel boarding perfect for kids who are curious about the water. Wondering what else to do in Camp Bernardino de Lavigan? Just check out their Facebook now and learn more!

Snorkboarding 101

When you think about snorkeling, you would most probably picture out the usual mask and tube that you wear. Unfortunately, if you’re a newbie or a younger enthusiast, this is not the gear that you might want to start with. You can instead choose to use aboard our raft. Not only are they safer and easier to use, they also provide you with an incredible window to look at the sea creatures without having to dip your head into the water.

If you’re looking to get snorkel boards or rafts, there are a lot of best boards available on the market right now. You can also use a guide on the details and specifications that you need to look for when buying or renting this equipment. It’s previously referred to as a board and is a piece of inflatable floating equipment with a transparent bottom where you can see the underwater through that window. This method saves the person from having to put on the snorkeling mask when heading into the sea. Over the years, the rafts have evolved in different designs, from a flat shape to something more versatile that will allow more movement and comfort as a snorkeler is viewing. Many brands also design them lightweight so you can easily carry them along with you in different viewing spots. You can also easily just tug it as you go out of the water. Their sizes are also accommodatable to kids and adults. From the snorkel window such as the lookup board to the raft where you can actually lie on the transparent glass to view, they have proven to be the safest option, especially for weak or novice swimmers.

If you ever wonder where the best place to snorkboard in Davao, water activities in Camp Bernardino, Davao Oriental include both snorkboarding and snorkeling. This means that you can enjoy the waters from up above as much as you do down below. This makes the resort perfect for families with kids who want to enjoy marine life too but are afraid to go down with the usual snorkeling gear. For more things to do in Camp Bernardino, you can check out their website now at campbernardino.com.

A Deeper Relationship

Let’s all admit it. Any relationship that has reached a certain level of confidence, security and comfort becomes stagnant at one point. You feel like you already know the other person too well and there’s nothing left to explore. You’ve done almost everything together, and have had your share of ups and downs through the years, and have memorized all the lines and strokes of each other’s palm, the flaws in each other’s skin. There’s just nothing new to discover. This feeling is normal for all relationships that have stood the test of time. More than being a couple, you’re now partners in everything that you do - with every decision and action almost too dependent on the other individual.

Some couples are lucky enough to be standing strong for as long as 50 years. That’s such an achievement not many of us here are able to unlock. As someone who’s been in a long term relationship myself, I can definitely relate to all this. I and my partner have reached our breaking points countless times that sometimes you can’t help but wonder if pushing on and going forward is still the right thing to do. I’ve seen her worst, she’s seen mine and we both know the things that piss the hell out of us. It was a struggle especially when we reached the 7-year itch. But now that we’ve been together for almost 2 decades, I’m beyond grateful that we’re able to find that thing that holds us together: diving. Yes, diving. It’s an activity that not a lot of people appreciate or are daring enough to try but it’s one thing that keeps our relationship deeper. Diving has been our therapy as a couple for almost a decade now, and it’s an important part of this commitment that we have to each other. Diving helps us understand our fears, our anxieties, and take care of all of them. With this activity, we were able to get to know each other better and understand our limits as individuals. It’s also a good ground zero sort of thing to go back to the simplest pleasures, and just appreciate life for what it is whenever we become too overwhelmed by everything that’s going on.

If you want to try out this therapy, or are looking where to celebrate your special moment as a couple, then head on over to the new Davao Oriental beach resort called Camp Bernardino. They are one of the few beach resorts with diving activity perfect for couples therapies. Check them out today at campbernardino.com.

What Makes Boulder Corals Important

Unknown to many, corals are a colony of animals called polyps. They may look like one, but actually, corals are not plants. They serve as the “forest of the sea” making the entire seascape so beautiful and colorful. The little animals in corals live in a symbiotic relationship with algae, building calcium stone houses for themselves. The houses are piled on top of each other, forming larger structures that serve as “apartment buildings” or termite hills for marine life. Corals come in different shapes that may look like boulders or branches. They can also form flexible structures that move with the currents. At night, corals usually come out to feed although there are some specific exceptions.

Unlike branching corals, boulder corals grow out onto the substrate on a single plane, and then they grow upwards earning that massive “boulder-like” mounds. They are among the many species of corals whose growth and survival have been drastically impacted by climate change and other environmental conditions. Stony coral tissue loss disease being one of the major stressors that these types of corals face. “The cause of the disease is unknown, but it has been making its way through the Florida Reef Tract since 2014. It destroys living coral tissue, leaving multiple blotchy lesions in its wake. Once a colony is affected, it will die within weeks or months.”

With the loss of boulder, coral species comes a range of repercussions, because of their many ecological and economic importance. They are the main coastal protection from storm surges. Boulder corals, among many other stony coral species, also provide refuge, nursery, and feeding areas for marine biodiversity. They support the fishing and scuba diving industries. This is why it is important to grow, propagate and outplant stony boulder coral species to immediate combat this problem.

If you’re looking where to find diving spots in Davao that is abundant in stony boulder coral species, then look no further. Davao Oriental’s new beach resort, Camp Bernardino de Lavigan, offers scuba diving and freediving activities where you can have an up-close encounter with these beautiful creatures. Considered one of the top Governor Generoso Beach resorts, Camp Bernardino de Lavigan’s water activities also include kid-friendly ones like snorkboarding, snorkeling, and kayaking. Lobster Benefits

If you had to choose between crab, tiger prawns, squid and lobster? Which would remain and which one would you unwillingly sacrifice? Absolutely nothing. Seafood is like a foodie’s dream cuisine and there’s no wonder why. Who can resist a plate of freshly boiled crabs and shrimps? If you’re like us who cannot under any circumstance say no to a seafood feast, then continue reading cause you’re in for a treat! Today, our absolute favorite lobster is here to grab the spotlight.

Lobster is a type of shellfish that’s typically served boiled or steamed. It is usually eaten as a main course here in the Philippines. But in other countries, it’s also enjoyed as a sandwich filler or added to rich dishes like pasta, salads and mashed potatoes. Despite it being a status symbol today, lobster was not always known as a pricey indulgence. In the 17th century, it was considered as a sign of poverty by the colonists in Massachusetts. In the 1940s, it was really cheap to buy a can of baked beans and a canned lobster. Today, it is now seen as a delicacy, partly because of the discovery that cooking it live made it more appetizing as opposed to killing it first then cooking it later.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, lobster is a rich source of copper and selenium. It also contains zinc, phosphorus, vitamin B12, magnesium, vitamin E and a small amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Although it contains cholesterol, recent studies have shown that not all cholesterol content in food is harmful to our body. Polyunsaturated fats on the contrary, can help reduce cholesterol levels and the risks of stroke and heart disease. While its overall fat content is high, lobster is not a significant source of saturated fat.

Many studies have suggested that consuming more shellfish decreases the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease while promoting healthy cholesterol levels. Lobster is important for providing omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in very rare foods. Eating lobster also helps prevent thyroid disease, due to its selenium content. This also helps decrease the risks of ADHD. Lobster is also known to reduce the possibility of anemia due to its high copper content.

No wonder people can get so addicted to lobster. Aside from its rich flavor, it also has a lot of physical and mental benefits for you! Craving for one? Check out this beach resort near Mati, Davao Oriental, Camp Bernardino de Lavigan. One of the many flavorful food available in Camp Bernardino is their freshly caught lobsters courtesy of their locals. Just type in “what to eat in Camp Bernardino de Lavigan” to start drooling!

An Island Living You Won’t Forget

Every place we visit gives us a certain kind of feeling that we can’t forget. Every place we find ourselves in leaves us a memory we would always go back to whenever a sense of nostalgia kicks in and we’re feeling a bit under the weather. We just replay those moments inside our head and we’re on our way to feeling relieved and a little more hopeful for better days.

I was lucky enough to be able to spend 2 weeks in this sacred place that I now consider my home. I know it’s only been a mere two weeks of stay, but Camp Bernardino de Lavigan gave me so much to remember, to learn, and to appreciate that I’m feeling more motivated now to move forward in life despite everything that’s going on. I work as an editorial writer for a lifestyle magazine and my boss assigned me for an immersive trip to this place, and write about budding resorts in Mindanao in anticipation of the new normal tourism efforts of the country. I was really hesitant at first, because as a city girl living in Manila who’d be thrown into complete rurality without any good reception, that was not a completely good idea for me. But I accepted the project anyway and I definitely had no regrets that I did. The thing about Camp Bernardino for me was it was a very refreshing experience. As someone who’s used to all the hustle and bustle of the city, overwhelming with air and noise pollution everywhere, I was able to see life from a different point of view while there. The resort made me feel like I’m more at home than ever and suddenly it dawned on me that living simply and more laid back like that makes us appreciate the simpler things the world can offer - the bounty of nature, the pretty sunset that starts at exactly 5:10pm every day since day 1 of my stay, and the beautiful sunrises that reminds us every day is a new chance to get better. Its rawness and genuinely captivating island living experience really struck me. It made so much impact on me how people can be content with what they have, and be sincerely happy about others’ happiness also, like how their staff took care of me well while I was there.

Davao Oriental’s new beach resort is the perfect place to get a new perspective in life. So if you’re looking where to stay in Davao Oriental, check out this beach resort near Mati now. More info available at campbernardino.com

Literally, when you cross borders from Lasang up north, you’ll encounter so many resorts on your way to the tip of Governor Generoso, or going further to Surigao. When you go South, then you’ll be greeted by the pristine waters of Sarangani Bay. If you’re not a fan of long drives, then the city still has you covered with its 15-minute boat ride to the Island of Samal. There are just so many places you can choose from and you’ll never run out of destinations whenever you want a quick break from everything. It’s very popular not only among Pinoys but also foreign tourists who really take time and effort to check out the large waves of this place. Dahican stretch of beaches - next to Samal, perhaps Dahican is the ultimate go-to place of Davaoenos. Many millennials flock in here as a quick weekend getaway trip especially during summer, holy week and other long breaks. Dahican boasts a similar vibe with Siargao which holds a lot of potential for international tourists.

Want to Feel Good? Check Out These Places

The recent months have been so stressful for all of us. Not all people might be able to show their stress levels, but this doesn’t mean the pandemic did not affect them in any way. Some really just prefer not to express it. But if you’re feeling really under the weather and you think you need a break, then go ahead. It’s best to take care of your mental health as much as you prioritize your physical health. It pays to go on vacations because it recharges your mind and makes you be able to think clearly. Stunning Philippine Beaches

The Philippines is so fortunate to have 1,107 islands that compose it, all of which have a certain unique beauty to blow your mind. Most tourists would flock over to Boracay, Palawan, Cebu, and Bohol, the top famous destinations for those who really want to witness the pristine beauty of our resources. We mostly see them fill up these places during peak seasons like summer or at the beginning of the year in the months of January to February, when flight bookings are also overspilling. It’s great that we have these curious bunch of people who want to know what the Philippine waters and tropical vibe feels like. But beyond these mainstream destinations are quiet wonders that are just waiting to be discovered.

Pagudpud beach in the far ends of Ilocos is a developing place that is perfect for those who want to go surfing but at the same time want to avoid the large crowds of Siargao or Mati. It’s known as the Boracay of the North and you’ll see why once you get a hold of their powdery sands. It also has a wide coastline with 20 wind turbines, making it Asia’s first windmill farm. If you’re up for the long drive, then this place is for you!

Down here in Mindanao, we’ve got Siargao as our main contender. Mati seconds the list, and both beaches are known as the surfing go-to place here in the Philippines. But if you’re more of a chill person and don't really want to go surfing, you still can enjoy both these beaches a different way. Siargao offers a lot of lagoons that make you feel you’re not in the same place. Mati also has a museum you can visit just to see the place in a deeper perspective.

The most exciting part of looking for the top beach resort in the Philippines is that it doesn’t end there. There are a lot of new developments now especially in Mindanao, exploring the glamping side of beach tourism. One of which is Camp Bernardino de Lavigan. What makes this place so unique is that it’s a complete package of luxury and outdoor adventure all in one! You feel the comfort that you experience in hotels, but at the same time, you feel more connected to nature because you’re in a tent basically, and you can freely explore the place in a laid back manner. The lifestyle is so simple and provincial, that you can just relax and enjoy the many water activities that they offer like fishing, diving, snorkeling, sailing, and more. There are also a lot of nearby attractions you can go to while in the area.

So what are you waiting for? Start typing where is Camp Bernardino de Lavigan, or how to get to Camp Bernardino de Lavigan and pack up for your next trip to one of the Philippine’s stunning beaches.

We have now evolved to be one of the most visited tourist sites in the Philippines, thanks to the continuous efforts of local residents to change our identity. One of the most popular places in Mindanao is Surigao, where you can find Siargao and Sohoton. Both are so stunning in their own way! If you are in for the ride, Siargao is the place to be. The Proposal

We all have the perfect dream proposal setup that we have in mind. Most of us take inspiration from the movies we watch, and girls most especially get all lovesick when they look at their favorite actors on bended knees and finally put a ring on it. It’s just so romantic and we can’t help but think, can this happen to me in real life? Well of course it can! Guys don’t need to feel pressured because the perfect proposal doesn’t really mean hurting your bank account just to make her say yes. We all get that misconception - that we need to spend a luxury just to make her feel special. But most of the time, it’s really just how you pull it off and make sure that it’s genuinely from the heart that you want to make her your one and only for the rest of your lives. And even the simplest gesture will win over anyone’s heart.

So today, here are some tips for guys out there who might be thinking of settling and tying the knot already:

  1. Do it in the perfect place - the perfect place doesn’t mean 5-star hotels. All you need to do is set the mood right. You can do this with the help of your friends!
  2. Catch her off guard - this is a bit tricky because you’ll never know what you’re gonna get. But a little thrill and a big hint of surprise is usually what gets the ladies. Just make sure you don’t make it seem too obvious that you’re about to do it!
  3. Pick the perfect time of the day - some do it at night over a romantic dinner arrangement. You can also do it during sunset when the sky is all golden and really moody. It makes for the most romantic scenario, especially by the beach.
  4. Be sincere and genuine - the most important tip of all is to be sure about what you’re doing. Don’t do it if you have even the tiniest bit of hesitation in you. Don’t do it just because you’re worried about your age or if you have other thoughts going on inside your head. Most often than not, it would just end up in a disaster. So before doing anything and choosing the perfect ring, be sure this is what you want!

If you want to know where‘s the best beach resort for couples in Davao, and where to celebrate romantic moments like this, then check out this beach resort near MATI called Camp Bernardino de Lavigan now. It’s serene, romantic, and breathtaking. Truly one for the books!
