Lobster is a type of shellfish that’s typically served boiled or steamed. It is usually eaten as a main course here in the Philippines. But in other countries, it’s also enjoyed as a sandwich filler or added to rich dishes like pasta, salads and mashed potatoes. Despite it being a status symbol today, lobster was not always known as a pricey indulgence. In the 17th century, it was considered as a sign of poverty by the colonists in Massachusetts. In the 1940s, it was really cheap to buy a can of baked beans and a canned lobster. Today, it is now seen as a delicacy, partly because of the discovery that cooking it live made it more appetizing as opposed to killing it first then cooking it later.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, lobster is a rich source of copper and selenium. It also contains zinc, phosphorus, vitamin B12, magnesium, vitamin E and a small amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Although it contains cholesterol, recent studies have shown that not all cholesterol content in food is harmful to our body. Polyunsaturated fats on the contrary, can help reduce cholesterol levels and the risks of stroke and heart disease. While its overall fat content is high, lobster is not a significant source of saturated fat.
Many studies have suggested that consuming more shellfish decreases the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease while promoting healthy cholesterol levels. Lobster is important for providing omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in very rare foods. Eating lobster also helps prevent thyroid disease, due to its selenium content. This also helps decrease the risks of ADHD. Lobster is also known to reduce the possibility of anemia due to its high copper content.
