When you think of Davao Oriental, you immediately remember the big waves in Mati. The surf crowd and the cool reggae music playing in the background. Most of the time, Davao Oriental is just really equal to that. But beyond this, there are actually a lot of hidden gems found in this region! Here are the 5 must-visit and do in Davao Oriental aside from relaxing in Mati.
- Cape San Agustin - it’s a bit far but the drive is super worth it! You can visit Cape San Agustin in Governor Generoso Davao Oriental which is famous for its lighthouses. Learn about history and religion here, and you can even have your prenup shoot there.
- Mt. Hamiguitan - if you’re daring enough to do this, you can go on and climb Mt. Hamiguitan Wildlife Sanctuary, which is one of UNESCO’s world heritage sites. It’s famous for the pygmy forests which are found in the topmost part of the mountain. Imagine seeing trees that are just the same height as yours. Then there’s the mystical tin along dagat, which for its name, is a hidden body of water. It only shows up during the rainy season. During other times of the year, this crater-like place is usually dry.
- Mt. Hamiguitan Museum - if you can’t bring yourself to the actual climb, then maybe the museum is a good start. It’s amazing because the museum is actually built to simulate the climb itself. Starting from the dipterocarp forest or the usual one with large trees, you climb your way up through their ramp, until you reach the pygmy forest. The best part is you end up in the advocacy section where you see the importance of taking care of the ecosystem.
- Aliwagwag Falls - Davao Oriental is really rich in water resources. Aside from beaches, you can also swim in one of their famous falls, the Aliwagwag eco-park. It’s a very Instagram-worthy view and you can bring your family here for a nice lunch.
- Camp Bernardino de Lavigan - the latest addition to this list is also the top place to visit in Davao Oriental. The newest of Governor Generoso’s beach resorts is just so amazing because the place is not too crowded yet. If you haven’t heard of glamping yet, then you can start here. They also have a spa, snorkeling, and very delicious food you can enjoy! If you’re wondering where Camp Bernardino de Lavigan is, it’s very easy to find because it’s a few minutes before Cape San Agustin.
Davao Oriental is really a paradise for those who love nature. You can spend like a month there and never run out of things to do. Make sure to stay in a comfortable place like Camp Bernardino de Lavigan when you plan your trip. Check out their Facebook page for more info!
